While most women in the world use the conventional cosmetics without a second thought, convinced for the products’ safety and efficacy, the global market of “natural” cosmetics is rapidly developing, and that is not attributed merely to a successful marketing. Nevertheless, large number of substances and ingredients used in most-common cosmetics are suspicious of causing allergies, dermatitis, damages to the hormone system, toxicity to the nervous and reproductive system, of having carcinogenic potential and of putting significant toxic burden on the environment.

The classification “natural origin”, “natural” or “organic” we see on packaging differentiates a product. For that, it would be best to know some basic facts before we make our choices:

Natural origin cosmetics: In this category we find the so called “natural cosmetics”. Their active ingredients are natural substances, but their excipients may contain significant quantities of synthetic substances. Natural substances in natural origin cosmetics ranges usually between 10 and 90%, but never reaches absolute naturalness (i.e. 100%).

Natural cosmetics: In this category we find cosmetics with large number of natural compounds. In official classification, on a scale from 1-10, natural origin cosmetics, namely the category above, are rated 1-5, whereas pure natural are rated 5-10, with 10 representing absolute naturalness. As the rank of naturalness increases, the less of suspicious or known to be harmful substances can be found.

Biological or organic cosmetics: They are pure natural cosmetics, made of all-plant based ingredients. The whole procedure, from the plant source to the packaging, uses organic farming methods in compliance with international regulations regarding manufacturing and product certification. In addition, biological or organic cosmetics contain none suspicious or known to be harmful chemical active ingredient or excipient, as set out in manufacturing and certification standards. According to the organic substances content, they are labeled and differentiated as “natural cosmetics with organic ingredients” and pure “organic cosmetics”.

Therefore, it is important to be aware that although a cosmetic product may contain natural ingredients, it’s not by definition safe, nor efficient. Nowadays, an increasing number of broad or selective cosmetic market makes sure that their product mix contain small amounts of natural oils or plant extracts, although without changing the mix at all. For example, almond oil content of 5% in what is otherwise a chemically synthesized facial moisturizing cream may suffice to denominate the final product “MOISTURISING CREAM WITH ALMOND” –an information that changes instantly the consumer’s opinion on the product.

Natural cosmetics with certified organic ingredients and certified organic cosmetics are obviously superior to “natural cosmetics”, because they contain none suspicious substance or excipient, nor chemical residues from farming. Therefore their application is absolutely safe for human organism and environmentally sound.
